Getting started

Plans & billing

How words are counted, what each API plan includes, annual billing and pay as you go.

Every plan includes a monthly allowance of words. Rewrite uses one word per input word; Detect uses one word per five scanned; voices, jobs and usage reads aren't billed. There is no free plan and no trial: test keys return simulated results for integration testing and are never billed.

How words are counted

EndpointUsesMeasured on
POST /rewrite1 word per input wordInput words. A rewrite that fails a strict fidelity check isn't billed.
POST /detect1 word per 5 scannedInput words, rounded up. Calibrated requests count the same.
POST /voicesNot billed3 voices on Basic API, 15 on Pro API, unlimited on Ultra API.
GET /jobs, /usage, /voicesNot billed—

A worked example

A content team checks a 1,500-word draft, rewrites it in a client's voice, and checks the result:

StepWords inAllowance used
Detect the draft1,500300
Rewrite (blog, standard)1,5001,500
Detect the output, calibrated1,560312
Total2,112

The rewrite response already includes before/after scores in signals, so the two detect calls are optional; skipping them brings this to 1,500 words.

Plans

Basic API$89/mo$74.17/mo, billed $890 yearly200k60 req/min, 3 voices, light and standard strength
Pro API$189/mo$157.50/mo, billed $1,890 yearly600k180 req/min, 15 voices, deep strength, calibrated Detect
Ultra API$389/mo$324.17/mo, billed $3,890 yearly1M600 req/min, unlimited voices, deep strength, calibrated Detect, highest queue priority

Annual billing is 10 months' price for 12. Annual plans still reset the word allowance every month; unused words don't roll over. Switch plans or billing period in the Stripe customer portal from Dashboard → Billing: an upgrade adds the extra words for the rest of the month right away, a downgrade applies from the next reset. Pay as you go

When the month's words run out you can upgrade, or switch on pay as you go in Dashboard → Billing. It's off by default. While it's on, words past your allowance cost $0.55 per 1,000, counted per started 1,000 words per request (a request that goes 300 words over costs $0.55). You choose a monthly spend cap ($50, $100, $250, $500, $1,000; $100 by default). Charges are billed monthly in arrears, on monthly and annual plans alike, as a separate Stripe invoice after the month closes.

With pay as you go off, or when a request would pass the cap, the request is refused before any work with 402 insufficient_words: “Your allowance is used and pay as you go is off, or its monthly cap is reached. Nothing was processed.” This hard stop can't be turned off.

Tip:

Upgrading beats pay as you go past a point: on Basic API, more than about 181,818 extra words in a month cost more than moving to Pro API (monthly billing).

What is never billed

  • Rewrites that return 422 fidelity_failed in strict mode.
  • Any request that returns a 4xx or 5xx error.
  • Anything sent with a sk_test_ key (simulated results, for integration testing).
  • Voice profiles, polling jobs and reading usage.
